Many people often deal with dry skin and this in particular can affect your heels. Dry/cracked heels is not only a cosmetic problem but can also lead to health problems such as bacteria and fungal infections. If cracks get deep enough, pain can develop which can make walking difficult. This condition can be especially harmful if you have conditions that lower your immune system such as rheumatoid arthritis or diabetes. If you notice that you are having cracks in your heel that are difficult to get rid of, there are some things that you can try:

  • Look for a thick moisturizer such as Eucerin or Gold bond foot cream. It is best to get a cream specific for feet or even hands as these will have increased levels of skin softening agents. After application, put on thin cotton socks to help lock in the moisture.
  • When getting out of the shower and your skin is still soft, very gently remove any excess dry skin with a ped egg. These can usually be found at any drugstore or on Amazon. These need to be used gently to prevent injury.
  • The key to success is being consistent. The moisturizer should be used twice a day, every day. If you miss a day or two you will be starting over.
  • Make sure that socks are changed everyday or if you find your feet sweating, socks should be changed twice a day to prevent fungal infection.
  • Obtaining heel cups that are placed into your shoes can help decrease pain and act as a shock absorber to decrease pain.

If the above measures do not improve your dry heels you should book an appointment with Elevate Foot and Ankle to make a telehealth appointment from the comfort of your home.
