Flaking, itching feet can be a significant nuisance. If your feet are constantly itching it may be from athlete’s foot. Athlete's foot also known formally as tinea pedis is a fungal infection of the skin. It can affect anyone but most commonly occurs in men and people over the age of 60. Symptoms usually include redness and dryness of skin on the bottom of the foot, burning and tingling, blistering, and scaly peeling skin in between the toes. The condition is contagious and can be spread via contaminated floors, towels, and clothing. Although the above may sound scary there are certain steps you can take to decrease your chance of getting the condition:

  1. Do not share shoes or socks with anyone

  2. Never go barefoot in public. This includes locker rooms, public showers, and hotel rooms.

  3. If your feet sweat, make sure to change your socks at least twice a day. Fungus loves moisture.

  4. If you are prone to moisture on your feet or have had athlete's foot in the past, you should use anti-fungal powder or spray in your shoes at least twice a week.

  5. At the first sign of athlete’s foot you should start treating with an over the counter antifungal cream. If you do not see results in a week, seek professional help.

If the above measures do not improve your athlete’s foot you should set up an appointment online with Elevate Foot and Ankle for a telehealth appointment from the comfort of your home or office.
